Hiking in Yorkshire

The Challenge

A big walk where we attempt to climb the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales! This is undoubtedly the classic walk in the Yorkshire Dales. The walk is approximately 23 miles in length with an elevation gain of over 1000m. Starting at Horton in Ribblesdale, the walk takes you on a superb circular of the hills. It is always fulfilling! Some people aim to complete this challenging trip in 12 hours. If that’s what you’d like to do we’ll be with you all the way.

Start of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks

Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club

If you complete the walk within 12 hours you can join the coveted "Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club", which was set up by Peter and Joyce Bayes. To be eligible for membership, you must book out and book in again at the Pen-y-ghent Café in Horton in Ribblesdale using the antique clocking machine. On successful completion you will be a member of the club and be eligible to wear a Three Peaks badge and tie (available to buy in the Café).

Doing the 3 peaks for charity?

Many people walk the Yorkshire 3 Peaks to raise money for charity. Most charities have sponsorship packs that will help support you – including offering a sponsorship form to track fundraising. If you don’t receive this, Lost Earth Adventures can send you one of our generic forms. For more details, including fundraising tips, visit our charity challenges page.

We can recommend the Station Inn at Ribblehead for their warm hospitality, good food, real ale and their variety of accommodation options. They offer comfortable private rooms as well as a bunk barn with dormitory accommodation and free camping. Please visit the Station Inn's website for details. There is also plenty of accommodation in Horton in Ribblesdale and Ingleton.

Children under 18 and older than 7 are most welcome on our private trips but we require a minimum age of 14 for open group events. Please let us know when booking how many and what ages they are. We have no upper age limit, as long as you have the determination and a sense of adventure!
If a member of the party cannot or does not want to continue at any point there are a number of opportunities to exit the route as we pass through a few villages along the way. If you wish to complete this challenge successfully we definitely recommend that you are reasonably fit and that you are able to carry a light daypack with you for the duration of the hike.

If you are intent on doing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in under 12 hours then getting a private guide is recommended. When joining our open group events we can only go as fast as the slowest member of the group. We have a maximum of 10 participants per guide. On groups larger than 10 this gives us the opportunity to split the group into a fast and a slow group as there will be at least 2 guides. In our experience most groups complete the challenge in under 12 hours but we can never be sure.
