Pateley Bridge
Created by the medieval monks of Fountains Abbey, our Secret Lake is the best kept secret in North Yorkshire. Even locals don’t know of its existence! Hidden among magical woodland, the lake is a truly special place. Just being there fills you with tranquility as there’s not a sound to be heard.
Large and jagged prehistoric rock formations nestle within the ancient woodland on the water’s edge, perfect for rock climbing and abseiling alike. The views on the water are mesmerising, accessible only via paddle boarding or canoeing. Shooting arrows, bush crafting and sitting around an open fire toasting marshmallows brings ancient folklore to life.

The activity lasts around 3 hours. In that time, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to learn new skills, test existing skills and get closer to nature in one of the best stand-up paddle boarding locations in Yorkshire.
Make a Day of It
Journeying: This is what most people who buy a SUP do it for. A full day trip down a gentle river or canal, have a picnic on the banks somewhere and cover a few miles out in the wilderness.
We can take you on a canal journey from Ripon through beautiful countryside and can even get as far as Boroughbridge. This is the same price as the 6-hour stand up paddle boarding but you also have to pay for a waterways license which is £5 per person, per day, and put our instructor back where you found them! You need two cars in your group so you can shuttle the instructor and yourselves back, if you want to do a one-way trip. You can paddle back the same way and not use vehicles if you like, as the canal can be paddled both ways.
Why not try canoeing on the same lake? Read about our canoeing activities or you could try your hand at climbing at the nearby Brimham Rocks. Click here to find out about our climbing activities.
