Langtang Trek to the Last Shangri La

Beyond the Beaten Path Adventure into the Langtang Valley

From £1345, Tour Runs Sunday to Sunday, 15 days – Both set departures and private expeditions available

Langtang Valley trek

A land of intrigue and mystique, of yaks and yetis, and of the greatest mountain range in the world, the mighty Himalaya, Nepal is a country that will inspire and enchant! Hike to the majestic Langtang Valley, through spectacular alpine meadows, past raging glacial fed rivers, experiencing traditional Tamang culture along the way. Wander through the chaotic streets of Kathmandu and find calm and tranquility within the temples and monasteries. Nepal, a country of astounding natural beauty, and warm, hospitable people is truly the last Shangri-La.

By staying at family run teahouses, instead of camping we are directly contributing to livelihoods of those living within the Langtang Conservation Area (it is also vastly more comfortable). Staying in teahouses is environmentally more sound than staying in tented campsites along with the added benefit of warmth and comfort. Tented expeditions often bury their waste and pollute the ground and miss out on the experience of meeting the host families. Staying in local teahouses also ensures that we eat a variety of fresh, homegrown, and hygienic meals.

Welcome to Nepal, let the adventure begin!

Trip Grading

Langtang mountains

This trip is considered to be moderate. Trekking into the Langtang is fairly gentle and should not be a problem for anyone who is reasonably fit and enjoys walking. We regularly take people in their 60’s on this trek. There are however many options to climb peaks and extend the walk so if there are varying fitness levels in the group it is very easy to accommodate every trekker.

As always on our treks there is plenty of staff and we can accommodate everyone’s trekking pace. We appreciate that in a group there will be many different speeds of walker and we don’t ever want you to feel like you are holding up a group or being held up. Having plenty of staff allow for us to change itineraries and pace easily.

We trek into a fairly remote part of Nepal at higher altitudes than you are maybe used to. There are a variety of steep ascents and descents, and we sometimes trek for up to 6-9 hours per day. As with most things a certain degree of fitness will make this trip more enjoyable.

Travelling to Nepal

You will need a passport with 6-month’s validity and you will need to obtain a Nepalese visa. The easiest way to get the visa is to buy it on entry to Nepal with either dollars or any major currency but not Nepali Rupees. Currently the cost for a single-entry visa valid for 15/30/90 days costs US$30/50/125. You can buy a visa in advance from the Neplese embassy in your home country if they have a location there. It is more expensive than buying it on arrival in Kathmandu and it doesn’t always save you time when you arrive as it is random which queue is longer. You also have to risk sending your passport off and they may take it for several weeks. You will need to buy travel insurance for your trip which you can find out about here. You also need to visit your GP or travel health professional at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to check what vaccinations you need.

For more information about travelling safely and obtaining passports you can see more at the FCO know before you go Travel Aware Campaign.

Why don’t we use domestic flights in Nepal?

All airlines in Nepal are on the EU blacklist. This means they don’t meet international safety standards. Lost Earth Adventures is passionate about giving every one of our customers the best possible experience but we will never compromise your safety to do so. Instead of domestic flights, we use private 4x4s to drive you to the start of your trek. You may see searing vistas, traditional villages and lush rice paddies along the way.

What Our Guests Say

“Thank you all at Lost Earth for a truly wonderful adventure. It was very hard at first but what a wonderful experience it turned out to be. Both Tina and I would like also to mention our two wonderful Sherpa guides Krishna and Laxman who both contributed to making life more comfortable and saw to our every need. It was like having a personal butler. Richard (Mr lost Earth) was also with us and added a personal touch to the tour.

I would recommend this holiday to people with a sense of adventure and love to see more interesting parts of the world. Top marks to all concerned.”
