Guided Climb of Kinder Scout

Summit the Highest Mountain in Derbyshire

Surreal Moon Walking on the Peak District’s Highest Summit

Hiking-up-Kinder-Scout

This peak is without a doubt the most fun and adventure you can have walking in the Peak District. A favourite hike amongst scout troops and school groups, those testing their DofE expedition skills and anyone with a sense of humour and hankering for a good adventure!

The trek is perfect on a dry and sunny day, but equally amusing in the wet. This walk is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and some mud on your boots.

Suggested Route

Altitude Gain: 635m – Distance: 8.8 miles (14.2km) – Time: 5-6 Hours

There are many routes to the top and we can take you on any of them but our favourite is a circular route starting in the village of Edale, passing by the Old Nag’s Head (a walker’s favourite and official start to the Pennine Way) and out towards the summit plateau of Kinder Scout.

Hiking in Derbyshire
The trail goes up via Grinds Brook, climbing steadily and gaining ascent as the path narrows, becoming rockier and there are a few steep steps to the top. From the plateau we’ll head towards Kinder Downfall where there is plenty of scrambling on the gritstone outcrops for the more adventurous and lofty views over a green and golden landscape.

Along the way, the fun really begins when we reach the plateau of the Dark Peak’s highest mountain, as quite possibly the world’s largest peat bog lies ahead, where the terrain looks like a bewildering and wild moonscape. Finding the trig point and official highest point is tricky, with care needed for navigation, but our experienced guides will find the way, leaving you to hop across the plateau and enjoy the scenery. The maze of peat bogs and the ups and downs means that no route is ever the same!

If we have time and you’re up for an adventure then there are some WW2 aircraft wrecks lying around that are worth the effort to get there.

Heading off the summit plateau, we head down a steep descent towards Jacob’s Ladder, via interesting rock formations, bewildering landscapes and a kaleidoscope of bright colours over the moorland. We’ll follow the Pennine Way back to Edale and the comforts of a well-deserved pint at a country inn.

Just over 80 years ago, an important part of history was laid down in the peat bogs of Kinder Scout. This was the location of a mass trespass where over 400 walkers and games keepers walked over Kinder Scout protesting their right (and our right today) to roam in the wilds of the English countryside.

Not only is it the highest point in the Peak District, but also, it is a deservedly adventurous hike worthy of its past fame.
