Mam Tor and The Great Ridge

Castles, Crags, Mountains and Moorland

A Guided Hike to the Skyline of the Hope Valley

Hope Valley near CastletonDifficulty: Easy/Moderate – Altitude Gain: 505m – Distance: 8.5 miles (13.6km) Time: 4-5 Hours

A classic, beautiful walk starting in Castleton, taking in the remains of Peveril Castle and the Limestone Way before reaching the high ridge along Mam Tor. Castleton is a lively village, situated in the heart of the Hope Valley. Home to numerous real ale pubs, cosy bed and breakfasts and surrounded by stunning and dramatic scenery, this is a hill walker’s dream.

The circular route swiftly leaves the bustle of Castleton behind, steeply ascending to the remains of Peveril Castle. Standing over the valley, this was once a formidable Norman fortress. We pass this impressive landmark walking along the Limestone Way – a national trail that goes through Derbyshire – continuing our ascent up the dry riverbed in the Cavedale Valley.

Mam Tor

The Route to the Summit

Starting in Castleton, the scenery begins to open up and becomes quite dramatic as we gain the ridge of the impressive Mam Tor heading towards Hollins Cross. From the ridge you can see spectacular views into the valley with Castleton, Hope and Edale in view. Just beyond is the imposing Black Tor, the highest point along this great ridge, seemingly increasing in size, as we approach. Here there is the option to climb over the top or skirt along the edges. After passing Back Tor, our final “peak” on the Great Ridge is Lose Hill, where it’s here that we’ll begin our journey back into the bustle of the valley floor.

A steep descent over moorland and heather, farmer’s fields and dry stonewalls brings us down back into Castleton; the perfect place to enjoy a pint and cheers to a successful, satisfying day in the mountains.
